Audiences and press very enthusiastic about 'A dog's heart'
On 7 June 2010 A dog’s heart by Alexander Raskatov was premiered in the Muziektheater, the home of Dutch National Opera, in Amsterdam. This in itself was nothing out of the ordinary. The enthusiastic audiences and numerous most favourable reviews about this Holland Festival production were extraordinatry for a brand new work indeed.
Approval
Almost unanimously music, performance and especially the way the opera had been staged met with great approval too. Humour, speed and the ingeniously operated life-sized puppet dog were much admired. Singers, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic and VocaalLAB led by Martyn Brabbins were judged most positively as well.'Absurdly good'
Critic Peter van der Lint in the daily paper Trouw (9 June 2010) ended his review about the singers thus "All of them are lifted up by an iteself surpassing Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic in the heat-resistant hands of Martyn Brabbins. The conductor does the impossible and coolly surveys and entirely controls the hellish pandemonium. This is no less than an absurdly good accomoplishment."
Top marks
In NRC-Handelsblad (8 June 2010) Kasper Jansen awarded the performancede top marks with 5 ‘bullets’. He also referred to the opera as having been “…received with ovational public success and the musical theatre highlight of the Holland Festival…” In the Telegraaf Eddie Vetter mentions "a Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic playing with full dedication…" (11 June 2010).'Stirring'
In the online Opera Magazine Jordi Kooiman ends his extensive review with: “The Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic led by Martyn Brabbins tackles the demanding music by Raskatov admirably. It was regularly capable of stirring everything a great deal.Afterwards the audience was stirred too. Loud applause, lots of cheering, enthusiastic conversations in the cloakroom: when does one hear something like that at a world premiere?“
