Pleyel première by Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic

Tuesday 27 October 2009

Frans Brüggen will be conducting première
One does not really expect conductor Frans Brüggen to be leading a première. Yet the Sinfonia in C B151 by Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) has never been performed in the Netherlands before. This French pupil of Haydn himself brought the symphony over to London in 1782. The manuscript is still held there. It is the only surviving source for this symphony, which has never been printed. The Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic is using parts which have been produced especially for this concert.

Competitor
During his three year sojourn in London Pleyel had actually been competing with his tutor. That is at that time Haydn (see image) was working for another concert organiser. Pleyels Symfonie concertante no. 5 is also on the program of this evening. The piece is of a later date then Sinfonia B151, when the composer had returned to Paris. The four soloists are members of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic.

Haydn
This year we commemorate the bicentenary of Haydn’s death. After his retirement this composer embarked on a second career in England, which became the happiest period of his life. His Symphony no. 101 is nicknamed ‘The clock’ because of its ‘tick-tocking’ second movement. No.101 is one of the 12 symphonies, which Haydn wrote in London.

Mendelssohn
Felix Mendelssohn too is celebrating an anniversary in 2009. He was born 200 years ago. His Overture Die schöne Melusina is on the program. This is one of the independent concert overtures by this composer. Felix disliked the music of Constantin Kreutzer’s opera Melusina so much that he wrote a new one. This music too had been composed for a London audience. It had been commissioned by the London Philharmonic Society.
