Michael Schønwandt chief conductor Radio Chamber Philharmonic per 2010-11 season

The Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt will take over as chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic at the start of the 2010-11 season. The current chief conductor, Jaap van Zweden, intends to concentrate exclusively on the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra starting in the 2010-11 season. Since making his conducting debut in 1977, Schønwandt has regularly performed with major European symphony orchestras and led opera productions in Copenhagen, Bayreuth (Die Meistersinger), Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera. His decision to join the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic was motivated by the flexibility of the orchestra and the rich repertoire possibilities it opens.

Schønwandt became acquainted with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic in April 2008. He conducted the orchestra at a Saturday Matinee concert of music by Kuhlau, Beethoven, Poul Ruders (the Netherlands’ premiere of Tundra) and Schumann. It was a mutually satisfying experience. Schønwandt commands a broad repertoire with a special interest in music of the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly contemporary Danish music.

Schønwandt is artistic director of the orchestra and opera of Copenhagen. He has previously served as chief conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and permanent guest conductor of La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. From 1979, he conducted the Danish opera in a broad variety of productions ranging from Mozart to Ligeti. In addition, he has been a guest conductor with the Berlin, Vienna and London philharmonic orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Israel Phiharmonic, the orchestras of Düsseldorf, Dresden and Stuttgart, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, Helsinki Philharmonic, and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

With Schønwandt as chief conductor, Philippe Herreweghe and James MacMillan (from the 2010-11 season) as guest conductors and Frans Brüggen as conductor emeritus, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic has at its disposal a versatile and highly qualified team of conductors.
